What is Deuter Futura Vario Pro Series?

If you follow Deuter brand, then you know that they have never had Deuter Futura Vario Pro backpacks. But backpacks under such a name are available on Amazon.

Futura is the most numerous series of Deuter packs, and it has been around for decades. Only the largest packs in the Futura group have had an adjustable torso length, and those have had the word Vario in the name.

On the other hand, Deuter has had Futura Pro packs for many years, and they still have them, but these packs are without torso adjustability. There are no Futura Vario Pro packs on Deuter’s site, and this series doesn’t really exist.

The packs that are on Amazon under the name Deuter Futura Vario Pro, are in fact their former Deuter Futura Vario packs that are now simply with the word Pro added to their name.

What is Deuter Futura Pro series?

I have a detailed comparison between Deuter Futura Pro and Deuter Futura Vario packs in my separate text, so there is no need to repeat things here.

So here I would only stress that the Futura Pro series is without some important features that are available in Futura Vario packs. So they do not have bottom straps, they are without extendable collar, and they are without floating lid.

The top picture above shows the Deuter Futura Pro 40 on the left, so you see that this is a pack without bottom straps.

Is there Deuter Futura Vario series?

Well, the answer is no. They discontinued this best series they have previously had, and now they have Deuter Futura Air Trek instead.

I have a direct comparison between Futura Air Trek and Futura Vario series, so please follow the link to see what this is about. You will realize that there is nothing substantially new in the Futura Air Trek series.

So what is now Deuter Futura Vario Pro?

Note that Deuter still has Futura Pro packs on their site, but those are without the word Vario in the name. These are smaller packs, and they have no torso length adjustability. The pack on the top picture above (left) is one of them.

However, from what I see on Amazon, the packs under the name Futura Vario Pro are exactly the same Futura Vario packs that have been around for a number of years already.

The top picture above (right) shows the Futura Vario 50+10 pack which is now with Pro added to the name.

I notice that this name switch is only on Amazon-US, on Amazon-EU shops these packs are without the word Pro in the name.

Now, these are excellent packs, among the best on the market, there is no doubt about it, I have one. But I have bought it under the name Futura Vario. You can see it in several of my texts in this site. Here are two posts where you can see it:

  • Is There a Backpack that Doesn’t Make Your Back Sweat?
  • How Do You Carry a Tent when Hiking?

All in all, I am a bit disappointed seeing all this. Deuter has made a mess with its excellent packs. Pity for such a stand-out brand.

First, they launched Futura Air Trek series that is almost the same as the previous Futura Vario series.

Second, they keep Futura Vario on Amazon-US under the name Futura Vario Pro. My guess is this will be until they sell them all. Pity again because these are great packs.

This all aside, if you need a top class backpack, buy one of these and do not think about their official name. They are with excellent ventilation and with plenty of great features, in fact they are my favorite.

Thank you for reading. Let me know if you have questions, there is a comment box below. Have a nice day.
